What is a Life Verse?

A life verse is a specific verse of scripture that deeply resonates with a person, offering guidance, encouragement, and comfort throughout their life. It becomes more than a personal mantra but helps guide them through life’s challenges and joys. A life verse speaks to the core belief of a Christian. Guiding their life experiences, goals, and dreams. It also brings complete clarity, hope, and inspiration, reminding him or her of their belief in the promises of God.

A life verse can vary from person to person, depending on their spiritual growth. Some choose a verse that speaks to their identity in Christ while others choose one according to their life purpose. Times of hardship can also be a determining factor when choosing a life verse. Regardless of the scriptural verse selected it is very personal and provides a continued source of guidance.

Example of Life Verses

Below are a few examples of life verses to provide inspiration:

Philippians 4:13 NIV  “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Jeremiah 29:11 NIV “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Isaiah 40:31 NIV  “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

These verses offer strength, encouragement, and hope. They’re a reminder of the faithfulness of God through all of life’s circumstances.

My Life Verse

As a woman, preacher, and servant of God, I truly love God’s word.  It has been my source of comfort and strength through many of life’s challenges.  Beginning with the Psalms, which are a source of comfort for me, to the specific books of the Prophets.  I enjoy reading and studying about the lives of God’s servants, the prophets, and how they walked with Him.

Acts 17:11 is my life verse.  It serves as a reminder to never take anything at face value, but to always be willing to dig deeper in the scriptures “…precept upon precept, line upon line…” (Isaiah 28:10 NKJV).  My life verse reads as follows:

“These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.”

Acts 17:11 NKJV

As a minister and woman of God, I have a responsibility to rightly divide “the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15 KJV).  Not only for teaching but for self-knowledge as well.  In a world filled with so much doctrinal error and division, it is our responsibility to study to show ourselves approved (2 Tim. 2:15 KJV) and to reach the lost for Christ.  The life verse that I have chosen is a reminder for me to do just that.  Are you ready to choose your own life verse?

How to choose a life verse

During your devotional time, pray and ask the Lord to give you a life verse.  Ask for complete clarity on its purpose and study it in depth.  What is the Lord saying to you from this verse of scripture, and why was it chosen? Allow it to direct you, knowing that your life is cemented in that verse from that moment forward.  Do not rush the process, and allow God time to speak to you.
