This post is not a review, but for informational purposes only.
If you’ve ever wanted to dig deeper into the Word of God, but didn’t know where to begin, then “Women of the Word” by Jen Wilkin is for you. It’s filled with rich insights, such as reasons to learn the cultural and historical aspects of a particular book of the Bible and so much more. Reading this book caused me to realize my approach to reading the Bible was self-centered. I continually looked for ways to see myself in it and how to improve my life, rather than seeing God himself. God is continually showing us who He is through His word.
“Women of the Word” provides a wonderful bible study method, the author calls “The Five P’s of Sound Study.” They are studying with purpose, perspective, patience, process, and prayer. Each step and chapter provides clear advice on how to go deeper in the scriptures during our time in the Word. The author does a great job showing the reader how and why she should remove herself from her approach to reading the Bible. For example, as previously stated, we should not read the Bible to see ourselves and what it says about us, but should approach it wanting to learn more about who God is.
Positives
I appreciate Jen Wilkins’ approach to reading through a book of the Bible several times to prepare to study, and with different translations for each read to gain a complete and overall perspective of that book. I will confess that it should work well for smaller books of the Bible, but not larger ones. Hello, Old Testament, anyone? Using this method is going to take both commitment and time but will be worthwhile.
Negatives
And while I find the author to be refreshing in her approach to biblical literacy and desperately needed, I often found myself wondering if I am willing, or can afford to follow her suggestion, to print each chapter of the Bible book I’ll be studying as suggested to work from. This is done to learn how to create questions, write notes, and ponder thoughts. To read more on this, see chapter 8 of “Women of the Word.”
Conclusion
Overall, I will confess that this book is not for the faint of heart. But if you desire to go deeper in the scriptures during your daily bible study time and draw closer to the Lord, then this book is for you. I love that Jen Wilkin is deep in her bible study method and can’t wait to read other books she’s written. “Women of the Word” by Jen Wilkin is available both new and used. Be sure to check and see if your local library carries it, where it’s always FREE!
